What I'm thinking is that the Crusaders are still blank-flanks; but in this world, instead of forming a club based around finding their cutie marks, they instead chose to work together to degrade those ponies who did have theirs, mocking every foal else's talents, so that no-one would ever dare mess with them.

One more question; if Ponyville's in ruins, where would the Crusaders and the other mirror-canon foals even go to school presently? Or even live presently, since Ponyville looks pretty uninhabitable right now.
