Discord had become obsessed with the idea of Twilight's disliking him, and so he set out to create a union between the two. He ended up making Twilight pregnant, but that wasn't the end of his shenanigans. A drunken one night stand with Rainbow Dash, who had become his drinking buddy over time, resulted in the rainbow-maned pegasus becoming pregnant as well. Ashamed and disgusted with herself, Rainbow Dash resolved to pretend the whole thing never happened after the baby was born. The baby in question was Squallfeather, and as soon as he was born she dumped him on her friend Fluttershy and put him out of her mind as best she could.

From the moment he was old enough to understand what was going on, Squallfeather realized that something wasn't right about him. He was born with a tiger's ear and a tiger paw, after all. Half of his body may have looked like a pegasus, but the rest of him was a far cry from that. Even his wings were an insult to pegasus kind. His wings were far too small for flight, and try as Fluttershy might have to assure him that it was okay there was no getting around the fact that he couldn't fly. He'd never be seen as nothing more than a thing of shame by his mother... If she ever saw him again.

Fluttershy would take him to visit Twilight every now and again, and that was how he eventually met his half sister Eris. He was mystified by the fact that there was someone like him in the world. Sure he'd seen his father from afar when he came to visit Fluttershy, but Discord never really acted as a father should. Eris would become his first real friend. Things only turned worse after a while, though. While good had come in the form of Eris's half sister, Inky Scales, being born, the bad came when his half brother Prism Bolt arrived on the scene. Evidently, after Rainbow had abandoned Squallfeather, she had a fling with another pony before ending up with Thunderlane and having Prism. Prism was quick to work out two things: Squallfeather was a hybrid freak and he couldn't fly. This gave him reason to find himself superior to the other boy, in spite of Squallfeather being older than him, and he was quick to begin bullying him.

Eris thankfully would go on to try and protect Squallfeather, but it only cemented the rainbow-maned hybrid's thoughts about himself further. He was a flightless freak as far as anyone else was concerned... Right? This only strengthened his bond with Eris, as she would be there for him whenever Prism picked on him.

His adoptive mother also ended up marrying a pony that his real mother had had a fling with, and this brought Rodeo Rose into the picture. Squallfeather didn't really bother to get to know her, at least not right away, but he did get to know the new foal that was born from Braeburn and Fluttershy's bond. This was Whisperwind, his little adoptive brother, and Squallfeather would go on to try and bond with him in spite of his being a freak.

Like his half sister, Squallfeather was flung into the new world. He wound up sticking to Eris's side and found himself thrown in a quest to help save the strange mirror world.
