Even once a time of calm had come to Equestria after Tirek’s re-imprisonment, it took a good while for Twilight and Spike to come to realise that the bond they shared went beyond friendship and into romantic feeling. The two did, however, eventually get together once Spike had reached maturity, and born of that union was a hybrid foal who Spike named Fire Ruby; inspired by the name of his favourite gemstone after the baby hiccupped fire and almost set Twilight’s mane alight shortly after her birth.
The timing could have been better. Not three years after Fire’s birth, a re-corrupted Discord made his appearance on the scene, taking over Canterlot, Ponyville, and most of the rest of Equestria with his powers of chaos. As the only Princess remaining – with Celestia imprisoned, Luna gravely injured, and Cadence and the Crystal Empire cut off from the rest of Equestria – Twilight took it upon herself to gather a small band of rebels to resist the reign of chaos; something that took up a lot – if not most – of her attention. Spike ended up doing most of the raising of Fire on his own while Twilight ran the rebellion, and as Fire grew into an adolescent, she soon became resentful of her mother. It wasn’t so much that Twilight was always preoccupied; rather it was that Fire saw it as her mother’s fault that she had been born a freak. Her mother was supposed to be smart; she could surely have found a way for her and Spike to have had normal babies together if she’d set her mind to it, and Fire wasn’t afraid to let Twilight know what she thought of the fact that she hadn’t bothered. All too often, Spike found himself having to keep the peace between the two females.
By Fire’s seventeenth birthday, the rebellion had reached its height. Ponies from all over Equestria, mostly old friends of her mother and their families, were called in to help. Fire met a few of their children, but before much could happen she – and possibly others – found herself being sucked through the rift into the mirror world. Fire, understandably, had yet to connect all the dots and figure out which sides are ‘good’ and ‘evil’; she is wary and suspicious of the figures of ‘Sir’ Discord and King Sombra, and wants little to do with them at all.
